Practical Information
All roads leading to Highland Nook are scenic gravel roads. Please ensure your vehicle is suitable for this terrain, especially during wet or snowy conditions.
Please print these directions and keep them with you in your vehicle to avoid any frustrations.
Pietermaritzburg to Highland Nook
D1357 Impendle Route
At the Merrievale/Howick turnoff take the R617 Underberg turnoff (Ext.99 road sign)
Approximately 6km after you have driven through Boston there is a road sign indicating Impendle, St. Michaels Church – turn right
Turn left at the T-Junction (don’t miss the turn – don’t go into Impendle town)
You will travel through MacSam community
At the base of the steep incline you will cross the Inzinga River Bridge, take the left hand road after the bridge, staying on the tar, as you continue travelling along you will cross the Umkomaas Bridge, continue along this road without turning off anywhere along the way
Keeping on the D1357 you will go through a village called Stoffelton
Approximately 15km further at the last T-junction, the Stepmore sign will be on your left, take a right hand turn and travel 2km up the road
Take a short left hand turn up the D6 road, following the caravan park signs until you get to the Borreray Boundary gate
2km down the road is the Cottage and Camping sign on a sharp left into Highland Nook.
Johannesburg – Mooi River Toll Gate – rosetta – Nottingham Route
Travel towards Mooi River and take the R103 towards Rosetta, Continue to Nottingham Road
At Nottingham Road there is a right hand turn towards Lotheni, a sign is posted near the Police station
Once on that road, continue for 29km on tar until you get to a gravel road, and continue a further 40km on this gravel road
The D6 turn off is on your right, that is the turn off to Highland Nook
Go 5km up following the signs until you get a left hand turn towards the Cottages and Campsites

Underberg to Highland Nook
From Underberg travel the 5km into Himeville
Keep driving straight through – passing Moorcroft Manor
There is a crossroad intersection, continue straight, this is where the tar road ends and becomes a gravel road.
There are yellow road markers indicating km distance. You will travel along this scenic road until the 23km marker
Just after the 23km marker on your left is the D6 road that will take you the remaining 6km to the Highland Nook turn off
